![]() It was even fun to just zoom in sometimes and watch what all the little characters were doing. And the adorable messenger guinea pigs that get launched via catapult. I loved all the fun and cute detail, like all the different job options students get when they graduate (based on skill, personality, and species requirements). This game reminded me how fun magic schools could be. When I realized this was a management sim + deck building game, rather than something more focused on building and characters, I was disappointed, but I ended up having so much fun! It’s such an addictive game. SPELLCASTER UNIVERSITY LORD OF EVIL DOWNLOADYou can get more info and download the game here on Steam or here on the official website! Long Review: SPELLCASTER UNIVERSITY LORD OF EVIL HOW TOWill you turn it into a black magic academy, with the best professors of necromancy and demonology? Or a place in harmony with nature to train druids and shamans? Or why not train adventurous mages, offering them options to learn how to fight and be stealthy? But this will require surviving the ruthless attacks of the orc tribes and the controls of the education authorities. Build your school, manage your budget, recruit teachers. In Spellcaster University, you take on the role of the director of a magic university in a colourful world of heroic fantasy. You may as well play as long as you can and see if you can win for the challenge AND experience.Spellcaster University is a cute, addictive management sim + deck building game in which you run a magic school by placing rooms, choosing staff and students, deciding what types of magic to prioritize, and cultivating relationships with local factions in order to meet your objectives and defeat the Lord of Evil. Having played all the way to the final map, I can tell you that no matter what spellbooks you have, if you don't know enough of how to play the game at the basic level you aren't going to win even with 3 star books. Each spellbook is simply an exchange you get for the curse you have to deal with, so you're mitigating your penalties. However, I will state that while the quality of the boon you gain each map can vary, the curses are consistent no matter what you do. It become important to figure out why the difficulty exists, or you just end up correcting something that may not be the source of the problem. It is bad design if that was not ever part of their design goals, however. Difficult games do exist in a number of ways. Keep in mind that many games play off this, so it is not 'bad game design' per se. If I have a run where I do very badly in the first School or two, perhaps only achieving 1 star for each, is there any point in continuing that run or is it doomed?īecause the way I see it, if a poor performance in your early Schools effectively means your run is over, then that is poor game design. Originally posted by Ghostlight:I am not experienced enough yet to have a solid opinion on the star system, however I would ask this. (like i said, more stars appearing as you come back and replay it.Įxample, maybe a map will offer a 4th star once you've met criteria from other maps, such as having x amount of archmages, etcĪnd then more criteria would need to be met before facing / beating the evil. and giving reason to come back an repeat a map, and also opening up the possibilities to expand the game development as a whole. you could make them tied to the map instead of all maps. Rather than having a very strict campaign with no wiggle room whatsoever.Īs for the "permanent" buffs from graduates. so every time the player moves the lord of evil eventually catches up to you. maybe you could just thematically just make it so the lord of evil is after the player. he isn't exactly going to lay out the welcome mat. It's also problematic thematically: you left those areas because they were overrun by the Lord of Evil.
